Our earliest information
comes from the 1861 and 1871 censuses which show a Sophia Bennett occupying
the property thought to be number 20. There are some differences in her age
and birthplace as reported on the two censuses which are given below. In
1851 Sophia had been living in Morton at that time she was aged 57 and born
in Wotton-Under-Edge. It is not yet clear when she moved to Thornbury but
the 1851 census shows that she was unmarried and looked after by a young
servant who lived with her. This is still the case in 1861, although she
seems to have lost a few years of her age!

It seems likely that she remained in the house until her death as she
appears in the 1871 census with a different servant to look after her:

Sophia's name appears in the Special Drainage Rate book of 1876 and it seems she continued to live in Thornbury until her death on 2nd January 1878 aged 84 when the event was recorded in St Mary’s Burial register.
