Edgar Walter - born in Thornbury on 6th December 1867. Edgar worked as a solicitor's clerk. He married Caroline Staley on 12th August 1897 in what is now the United Reformed Church in Thornbury. We have been told by a member of the Pitcher family that they had two children, Ruth and Donald. Records we have found show "Ivy R," born in 1898, but this daughter may have been known by her second name, Ruth. Edgar was very involved in the Congregational Church. He wrote a paper on 'The Thornbury Congregational Church'. He was deacon, church secretary and Sunday school Superintendent at the Congregational Church. He was also a member of Thornbury Bowling Club. Edgar's wife, Caroline died in 1936. The funeral report of Edgar Walter Pitcher in the Dursley Gazette says that he died suddenly on Tuesday, February 29th 1944 aged 76. It mentions that he was employed by Crossman and Co for 62 years. The organist was his son Donald Pitcher. His daughter, by now Mrs W. J Edmunds, was at the funeral with her husband. There is a more surprising piece of information there as well. Mr Pitcher was engaged to be married to Miss G. Boyt and was to have been married very shortly. We are not sure who Miss Boyt was, but she is likely to have been the daughter of Edwin Boyt of Crossways. Edgar's parents taught at what seems to be a Sunday School in Crossways so perhaps the families knew each other from those times. Gwen Boyt continued to live at Crossways until her death in 1963. Francis Henry James - born in Thornbury on 29th September 1869. Francis worked as an ironmonger's assistant in 1891. He married Dorothy L Boulton in 1889. In 1891 they were both living with Dorothy's grandmother, Mary Ann Thurston, at Cockmead in Kington where she was assisting at her laundry. By 1901 he had moved away to Stafford and was working as a mechanical engineer. Francis and Dorothy had at least one child; a daughter called Ethel was born in Bridgend in 1898. It appears that they had other children as we have been told of a Violet, Pearl, Queenie and Walter. We understand that Francis eventually moved to Manchester where he worked in the city transport department. Annie Maria - born in Thornbury in 1871. Annie appeared to stay at home and never married. She worked as a dressmaker and mantlemaker in the 1891 and 1901 censuses. She died in 1923 aged 52 years and is buried in her parents' grave at Thornbury Cemetery. Leonard - born in Thornbury in 1873 - click here to see more details of Leonard Albert Edward - born in Thornbury on 13th January 1875. The records of St May's School say that Albert gained a scholarship to the Grammar School. In the 1891 census, he is shown as a grocer's apprentice. By 1901 it seems he had moved to Fulham where he is worked as clerk. Albert married Amy Dealtry and had two daughters, Dorothy and Kathleen. Arthur Charles - born in Thornbury in 1876.
