  • Congregational Chapel in Chapel Street built in 1826 with 400 sittings.  Weslyan Chapel built in High Street in 1878. Baptist Chapel in Gillingstool erected in 1780 with sittings for 300.

  • Cossham Hall.  This building was originally a Wesleyan Chapel built in 1789 and presented to the town by the late Handel Cossham in 1888.  It has since been enlarged by the Parish Council and is used for Concerts, Entertainments, Meetings etc accommodating about 400 persons.  For terms and particulars apply to Mr F Williams The Seed Supply High Street.   • Cricket Clubs.  Thornbury –Mr R E Bush captain, Mr H Talbot Secretary- ground near the Ship in Alveston.
  • Thornbury Castle Cricket Club– Sir Stafford Howard captain, Mr T Smith vice-captain. Mr S Gayner, treasurer, A C Pitcher secretary.  Ground near the Castle.
  • Fire Brigade.  The Fire Engine is the property of the Thornbury Parish Council and kept at the Fire Station, St Mary Street.  No charge is made for the use of the Engine at fires within the parish but in cases of fires outside the parish £3 3s is charged for the use of the Engine and £1 10s for horse hire in addition to the pay of the Brigade according to the rules and all other expenses incurred.  The firemen are as follows.  Mr A H Wilkins Captain W Phillips Dep Captain, O Higgins, F Sainsbury, J Radford, E Purnell, F Walker, G Phillips, G Cook, E Cripps, R Mills.

  • Gospel Total Abstinence Society.  A United Band of Hope in connection with the Non-Conformist Churches of Thornbury, is held on alternate Tuesdays at 7pm consecutively in the Baptist, Congregational and Wesleyan Schoolrooms. Mr G Whitfield, president; Mr J N Nichols, superintendent; Mr G Stone secretary.
  • Market.  A large and important market for horses, cattle, sheep, pigs, fruit, & etc is held at Streamleaze on the second Wednesday and fourth Monday in each month.  Prizes are offered for the best cattle and to the biggest purchaser at the December market.  Mr W Phillips toll collector.  Messrs Luce Young and Alpass and Messrs Moses Smith and son auctioneers.
  • Motor Services.  A motor bus service runs through Thornbury from Sharpness to Filton and Durdham Downs at frequent intervals in connection with the Bristol Tramways Co’s Cars to all parts of Bristol.

  • Thornbury Brotherhood.  Meeting held at 3 in the Wesleyan Chapel, High Street. Rev Joseph B Alger President. Mr F Holly Secretary.
  • Thornbury Fanciers’ Society.  A show held in November in the Cossham Hall of poultry, pigeons, cage birds and rabbits. Hon Mrs B Mundy President; Messrs W T Liddiatt and F J Williams, Secretaries.
  • Thornbury Circulating Library.  Over 400 volumes in reading; for further particulars apply to A Prewett stationer.
  • Thornbury Society of Gleemen.  Practices are held at the Church Institute on Monday evenings during June July and August. monthly ; remainder of the year fortnightly; Sir Stafford Howard President; Mr H P Thurston Conductor. The annual concert is given on Shrove Tuesday.
