George Tucker

George Tucker

The rate book of 1890 shows that the next family to occupy number 12 Gloucester Road in Thornbury was that of George and Louise Tucker.  The 1891 census shows that George Tucker was a 28 year old carpenter who was born in Thornbury.  Louise, his wife was 30 years old.  George’s mother Emily aged 60 was living with the couple.

George Tucker was the son of Thomas Tucker, a master carpenter and his wife, Emily.  Their family had been living in 21 St Mary Street in the 1861 census and in 17 St John Street in the 1871 and 1881 censuses, although George’s father, Thomas, had died in 1877 aged 46 years.  In 1880, the records of the United Reformed Church show that George was living away from home in Kingswood, near Wotton-under-Edge.

George Tucker married Louise Jane King in Thornbury on June 27th 1889 in what is now called the United Reformed Church in Thornbury.  George was born on 10th November 1862.  Louise Jane King was the daughter of George King, a baker and his wife, Ann.  In 1881 she was a schoolmistress living at home with her parents in Siblands.  They must have moved into 12 Gloucester Road shortly after their marriage.

George followed in his father’s footsteps and took up carpentry as his trade.  When George left home following his marriage, his brother Frank stayed in the family house in 15 St John Street which became the base for the building business set up by the two brothers called Tucker Brothers and they made use of the house next door (17 St John Street) which became their office.  Read more about Tucker Brothers

George and Louise had only one child, Reginald George baptised in the Congregational Independent Chapel on 18 June 1890, but he died aged six months and was buried in the Congregational Church burial ground on 22nd September 1890.

The 1901 census shows only the couple themselves and George’s mother living in the house.

George and Louise were still there in the 1911 census by which time they had been married 21 years but they had had no more children.  The two of them were still there in the 1921 census.  Louise died 21st July 1927 aged 68 years.  The report of her funeral at the Congregational Church said how very well attended the funeral was and that Mrs Tucker had been on the committee of the Women’s Guild and an active member of the WI.

The electoral roll for 1928 shows that George’s nephew, Norman Frank Tucker moved into number 12, presumably to help look after his uncle.  George died on 9th November 1931 aged 68 years and after a funeral at the Congregational Church he was buried in the Non-Conformist section of Thornbury Cemetery.

We know that Norman continued to live in number 12 after George’s death.  Read more about Norman Tucker

Norman died on 7th September 1954.  His wife, Sarah continued to live in the house until 1962 when she moved to a house in Church Road which had been built by the Tucker family.  She died in 1976.
